anima
Definition:
The anima represents the unconscious feminine aspect within a man, shaped by his experiences with women and collective archetypal patterns. It influences creativity, emotion, and relationships and often appears in dreams or fantasies as a feminine figure.
Example:
How might men approach their coaching, therapy or analysis? It is not a stretch to imagine that men might find it harder to express their emotions or feelings. So how might we unlock this?
The anima is a part of the structure of the psyche whose function is to reactivate or reconnect a man's relationship with their unconscious. The goal of analysis is to become who we really are, distinct from others and yet in relationship to others. Analysis is a way to open up dialogue between the client, his external world [work or personal life] and his inner world of the unconscious. For this process to work, a man needs to become conscious of his anima and its connecting role to his unconscious [and a woman of her animus]. Therefore the psychoanalytic concept of the anima is of particular significance in the analysis of male clients.
The anima is complementary to the persona: the 'good impression' of ourselves that, for example, a male ego presents to the external world based on societal, cultural, gender and familial norms. The persona develops out of a compromise or even collision between the real, authentic man and demands/expectations of the external world. The long term effects of the collision often at mid-life motivate men to go into analysis or coaching. They cannot reconcile the two demands.
The anima can also be perceived as an archetype or soul-image which compensates male consciousness. It has feminine element to it [not to be confused with gender] an opposing but complimentary quality to exclusively male consciousness. Relationship with the anima or opposing quality gives vitality, creativity, flexibility and relatedness. Qualities which are necessary to help the male client resolve their issues.
The anima can create the most profound personal understanding or initiate the best risk ever taken in a person's life. The client who is able to differentiate between their persona and anima is called the 'masterpiece' of analysis/coaching. From here the man can take big, positive strides in their career or personal life which far exceed his expectations.
The anima helps a man achieve emotional balance, creativity, and deeper understanding of his unconscious motivations, enhancing personal relationships and self-awareness.
